Yorkton is a city located in southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada. Originally founded in 1882, it became a city in 1928. As of 2017 it had a population just under 20,000 residents. The town lies in the centre or a rich prairie parkland known for its agricultural production, particularly grain crops.

The city was originally founded by the York Farmers’ Colonization Co. and was located 4 km northeast of the current site and I was called York Town. With the establishment of the post office in 1884, the city was renamed Yorkton and moved to its present-day, track side site when the railroad came in 1889.

With a rich history, Yorkton offers some great sites for locals and tourists alike. The Western Development Museum has four locations that focuses on Saskatchewan history from pre-development through today. The Yorkton site focuses on the history of immigration and agriculture in the province. Some of the features are the Maxwell Roadster and Morris Rod Weeder.

Godfrey Dean Cultural Centre is a local art museum that provides engagement opportunities with art through workshops, exhibitionism classes and events. They also provide professional development and educational opportunities for artists. There are ever changing exhibitions, so seeing something new is never a problem.

St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church was opened on August 23rd, 1914. The beautiful; church is known for the beautiful paintings of the dome finished by Steven Meusch in 1942. The Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help painting that originally hung behind the church altar is a certified copy of the original in Rome and was hand-painted on wood. It is still displayed in the church sacristy.

If you want to get outdoors and explore the natural habitat of Yorkton, visit the Ravine Ecological Preserve. Located on the west side of the Gallagher Centre it has a 2.8 km long walking trail, floating boardwalk, arboretum and a variety of habitats from aquatic to parkland.

The Gallagher Centre is a recreation, sports, meeting and entertainment hub. A multi-level building that can host many different events from tradeshows to Ag events like equestrian shows. An ice rink and curling center are available for club or public use. There is also a water park, wave pool, lane swimming pool, soccer, pickleball, tennis and volleyball are also offered. This is a one stop place for all things sports, recreation or exhibit needs.

Yorkton is not the biggest town in population but offers a lot of culture and recreation for its residents.
